Wellfleet's biggest Oyster Competition was started in 2006 from the brains
of Pirate Shellfish. While oystering in Wellfleet you will see some gigantic
oysters. These oysters rarely make it to the restaurants because of their
size. Since most oysters sold are just over three inches, these monsters
look out of place on a plate. However, some oyster connoisseurs love
these briny giants. The first two years of the competition have brought out
some big oysters. The 2008 champ Jim McGath produced the largest yet
at 430g. Unfourtunatly After a severe winter of ice the previous to biggest
oysters met their demise. This however, opened the door for a new
champion! 2009 Brendan Murphy triumphed with a 297g banana oyster.
